Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (SWS) announced today that its independently developed 300,000 DWT ammonia dual-fuel Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) has been awarded the Approval in Principle (AIP) certificate for ship cybersecurity by China Classification Society (CCS). This marks the issuance of the first CCS ship cybersecurity principle approval (SL2 AIP) certificate in China.
The certification demonstrates compliance with the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Unified Requirement for Cyber Resilience (URE26), as well as the class notation requirements of CCS CyberSecurity (P[SL2]). According to CCS’s Guidelines for Ship Cybersecurity, cybersecurity levels range from SL0 to SL4 across five tiers. Achieving the SL2 level — higher than the entry-level SL0 — reflects a comprehensive balance between cybersecurity protection and implementation feasibility.
This milestone significantly enhances the vessel’s resilience against cyber threats and addresses the shipping industry’s evolving needs amid trends toward digitalization, smart technologies, and green transformation.
SWS remains committed to pioneering innovations that support the safe and sustainable development of the global maritime sector.
